Scottish airport controversy

The Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport has condemned the Scottish Government's decision to take the loss-making Prestwick Airport into public ownership.

Gordon Dewar said the rival Ayrshire airport should "stand on its own two feet".

Dewar also repeated his criticism of public money being used to help restore flights between Dundee and London.

His comments follow a move by Ministers to invest more than £6m of taxpayers' cash into Prestwick since buying the airport in November for just £1 to prevent its closure.

Glasgow Airport said that it had previously expressed fears over the deal but had been assured by Ministers that Prestwick Airport would be run on an "entirely commercial basis".

Dewar told BBC Radio Scotland: "Every airport in the Central Belt should be standing on its own two feet. It should be commercially profitable, investing its own money and certainly not being supported by the public sector."  www.edinburghairport.com
